چکیده

Intrinsic complete characterizations of constructive, context-free and regular languages have been formulated by means of configurations of languages. The definition of a semiconfiguration is given here by generalizing the definition of a configuration. By means of semiconfigurations, an intrinsic complete characterization of context-sensitive languages is formulated. 1. Languages and generalized grammars. If V is a set we denote by V* the free monoid over V, i.e. the set of all finite sequences of elements of the set V including the empty sequence A this set being provided by the binary operation of concatenation. We identify one-member-sequences with elements of V; it follows V £ V*. If x = X]X2, ... x " e V* where n is a natural number and xt e V for i = An ordered pair (V L) where V is a set and L £ V* is called a language. The elements of V* are called strings. If (V, L), (U, M) are languages then we define the intersection (V, L) n (U, M) of these languages by the formula (V L) n (U, M) = = (Vn U,LnM). Let Vbe a set, suppose R £ V* x V*. Let us have x, y e V*. We writte x-• y(R) if (x, y) e R. Further, we put x =* • y(R) if there exist such strings u, v, t, z e V* that x = utv, uzv =-y, t-> z(R). Finally, we write x =>* • y(R) if there exist an integer p ^ 0 and some strings x = t0, tu ..., tp = y in V* that tt_x=> r,(R) for i = 1,2,... ..., p. Then the sequence of strings (t,)f=o is called an x-derivation of y of length pinR.

On Growing Context-Sensitive Languages

Growing context-sensitive grammars (GCSG) are investigated. The variable membership problem for GCSG is shown to be NP-complete. This solves a problem posed in DW86]. It is also shown that the languages generated by GCSG form an abstract family of languages and several implications are presented.

The Church - Rosser languages are the deterministicvariants of the growing context - sensitive languagesGundula

The growing context-sensitive languages have been classiied through the shrinking two-pushdown automaton, the deterministic version of which characterizes the class of generalized Church-Rosser languages (Buntrock and Otto 1995). Exploiting this characterization we prove that this latter class coincides with the class of Church-Rosser languages that was introduced by McNaughton, Narendran, and ...

Describing Computations by (bounded) Local Sets

We introduce the deenition of local structures as description of computations to recognize strings. Then, we identify the type of local structures corresponding to regular, context free and context sensitive languages, respectively and give a uniform characterization of those families in Chomsky's hierachy in terms of projection of frontiers of local sets of structures. In the second part, we c...

An Insertion into the Chomsky Hierarchy?

This review paper will report on some recent discoveries in the area of Formal Languages, chie y by F. Otto, G. Buntrock and G. Niemann. These discoveries have pointed out certain break-throughs connected with the concept of growing contextsensitive languages, which originated in the 1980's with a paper by E. Dahlhaus and M.K. Warmuth. One important result is that the deterministic growing cont...

Music as a formal language

The main focus of this paper is the characterization of generic musical structure in terms of the apparatus of formal language theory. It is argued that musical competence falls into the same class as natural language with respect to strong generative capacity – the class of mildly context-sensitive languages described by Joshi (1985).
